The rafters are the wooden parts that extend from the eaves to the ridge and meet there. Together with the roof purlins, they play an important role in roof statics. The rafters carry most of the load of the roof. This means that the roof windows are installed between the rafters.
The rafters are almost always so strong that an overarching rafter bracket can be installed without any problems and without affecting the statics.
Common cross-sections of rafters in single-family houses are often 8/18 cm, 8/20 cm etc. thick. The thickness of the rafters varies depending on the structural design and thermal insulation.
Since thermal insulation and, more recently, on-roof insulation are always used between the rafter brackets, there is also a lot to consider here.
Avoid thermal bridges at all costs!!
